Bury St Edmunds - A14 East (5 / A28):

Bury St Edmunds - A14 East

At the top of the image can be seen the extensive site of the British Sugar beet processing factory. It has been located here for a number of reasons: The land in this area is flat for building. It is next to the River Lark which is used as a source of water. The A14 (A45) dual carriageway links the factory with Ipswich, Felixstowe and the Midlands and is convenient for access by heavy lorries that transport the sugar beet to the factory from the surrounding area.

Although not easily visible the main east-west railway line crosses the site. Notice the other industrial sites to the east of the A14 which helps to separate them from the town centre.

In the distance can be seen lagoons used for storing waste washing water. There have been a number of accidental pollution incidents that have been attributed to this factory. These have caused severe pollution of the River Lark resulting in the death of 1000's of fish.
