Felixstowe - Docks South East (16 / I10):

Felixstowe - Docks South East

The Languard container terminal is located where the Orwell estuary has been deepened to cater for the largest ships as containers are imported/exported around the World. On the left you can see Languard Fort which was built in Napoleonic times to defend the coastline from attack by the French.

A nature reserve is found on the shingle spit between the fort and the sea. This part of the coastline is protected from erosion by a sea wall and groynes. The process of longshore drift is transporting material from the right to the left across the image and this has led to the development of Languard Point.

The rest of Felixstowe docks are found to the west of this image.
