Newmarket - The Severals (2 / 7):

Newmarket - The Severals

The breeding of race horses has been a major industry in Newmarket for more than two centuries. The town and all the surrounding landscape has been shaped by this industry. The photograph shows a string of horses being taken out to be exercised. The open paddocks of the "Severals" can be seen to the left and special circular walks and trotting rings have been set aside for training routines on the right.

Breeding racing horses is a multi-million pound business employing a wide range of people not directly concerned with the horses themselves from photographers and special horse artists to jewellers, sculptors and taxi drivers.
