This is the Nuclear Electric site on Suffolk's Heritage coast. On the left is Sizewell 'A' nuclear power station which has been producing electricity for a number of years. Sizewell 'B', a P.W.R. type station, is seen under construction. The large white reactor dome is visible from many miles away. This is a greenfield site on the coast to the north of Aldeburgh. It is a relatively isolated location with a large area of flat land available. The sea provides the necessary cooling water and also access for shipping delivering materials while it was built. Sand and gravel is also available from the sea bed.
On the right can be seen the large car park for the 3500 workers employed during construction. The area to the right of this image has been selected as the site for a third nuclear power station even though it is close to the Minsmere bird reserve and the Dunwich heath owned by the National Trust. |
