Bury St Edmunds - Sugar Factory 2 (5 / A23):

Bury St Edmunds - Sugar Factory 2

This is to the north east of Bury St Edmunds town centre, adjacent to the A14 dual carriageway.

The factory covers a large area with production, storage and distribution facilities. The seasonal processing of sugar beet into refined sugar takes place between October and January. During these months the characteristic 'smell' can be experienced when the wind is in the right direction.

Sugar beet is a popular arable crop and is grown by local farmers under contract from British Sugar. The root crop is harvested and processed during the winter months. This is Britains second biggest sugar beet processing factory. The 1,500 growers the plant services together produce 1,600,000 tonnes of sliced beet per campaign. Suffolk has another processing plant found to the west of Ipswich.
