This industrial complex lies on the north bank of the River Stour along the main London to Ipswich railway line.
A number of companies including a multinational (I.C.I.), produce sheet plastic products for the audio visual, automotive and packaging industries.
The original company (BX Plastics) were forced to relocate from London at the end of the 19th Century to be in a rural location in case of explosions due to the unstable nature of plastics at the time. Compare this old industrial area with a modern industrial estate at Hadleigh or Ipswich.
The original site has been developed considerably aided by the flat nature of the surrounding land on the edge of the Stour estuary. Notice the area of saltmarsh next to the river that has not been reclaimed. |
