This image shows the River Ore and marshes to the east of Hollesley. The water in the foreground is the North Sea with the shingle of Orford Ness immediately behind. Patterns can be seen in the shingle as it has been deposited over a period of time by longshore drift. The spit or Ness, to the east of Orford, starts at Aldeburgh and continues southwards for a number of kilometres, blocking off the Alde and Butley rivers, finally entering the sea at Shingle Street.
The arable farmland in the background is found on land raised above the very low lying marshes seen in the centre of the image. Some of the area is salt marsh while the rest has embankments for flood protection and is being used for grazing. |
