Thorington Street - Flooding:

Thorington Street - Flooding

This is a low lying area next to the River Stour which in normal times is flowing from the top left to bottom right of the image on its way from Sudbury to the Stour estuary at Cattawade. Due to heavy rainfall the river quickly rose to its bankfull stage. After further rain the level of water continued to rise flowing out of its channel and flooding the surrounding flood-plain.

The normal course of the river can just be made out by the pattern of trees on the left and by the vegetated banks in the lower right. When an area suffers flooding there can be considerable damage and disruption. However, where the fields have been flooded they will have been enriched by the deposit of silt deposited by the flood water. Other parts of the Stour valley, such as at Nayland, were also flooded at this time.
