This is an area of salt marsh on the northern bank of the Stour estuary at Erwarton Bay. The water to the top left is the River Stour while the farmland in the bottom right has probably been reclaimed in the past like those at Shingle Street and Aldeburgh. The marshes are tidal and are seen at about high water. At low water a large area of mudflats would be exposed. A complex pattern of channels are found in this area which is flat and low lying. These marshes are covered completely by high spring tides and the vegetation that grows there has adapted to live in these conditions. Some parts of the River Alde have embankments in an attempt to drain the marshes. |
