Felixstowe - Languard Point :

Felixstowe - Languard Point

This is a rather unusual view of Languard Point to the east of Felixstowe docks. This spit is made of shingle which has been deposited by the action of longshore drift, the material having been eroded further up the coastline. This spit provides excellent protection for the docks which lie immediately behind it. It has also been used since Napoleonic times for defence as there is a fort and gun emplacements from the second world war just out of view in the top left.

The southern edge of the spit is protected from erosion by groynes which stick out into the sea. These are collecting beach material as can be seen in the left hand part of the image. The spit is an internationally important bird reserve and is home to a number of rare shingle loving plants that only grow in this area.
