This is a detailed image showing the area around the mouth of the River Deben. The river flows from Woodbridge across the image into the North Sea on the right. The small hamlets of Felixstowe Ferry, on the nearest bank, and Bawdsey, on the opposite, can be seen along with Bawdsey Manor in the top left. The North Sea is moving material southwards along the coast by longshore drift and this has led to the formation of a small spit where the river enters the sea. In the lower part of the image the darker area of land is salt marsh which is occasionally covered by the sea at high water.
The greener area to the right has been reclaimed and is protected from the sea by raised embankments which can clearly be seen. Apart from a few houses Felixstowe Ferry is devoted to golf, fishing and sailing. Many boats can be seen moored in the channel. This is a picturesque place which becomes on of Suffolk's tourist 'honey pots' as it is very popular in the summer with visitors.
The Deben estuary has recently been declared a Special Protection Area under the European Union's bird directive. |
