Ipswich - River Gipping (5 / 9):

Ipswich - River Gipping

The River Gipping is flowing over its flood-plain towards the Orwell estuary. This area was avoided by town centre development as it used to be marshland like Stour meadows in Sudbury. However the land was drained and is now used by industry which has taken advantage of the areas flatness. The railway line follows the edge of the flood-plain and the Victorian station can be seen opposite the bridge. The Stoke area to the left of the station was largely fields when the railway was first built. The original station is found out of the photograph on the left. The present station replaced this in 1860 when Stoke tunnel was constructed and the railway line was extended to Bury St Edmunds. Ipswich town centre is off to the bottom right.

Some industrial and large retail units are seen along with the Post Office sorting office and Ipswich Town football ground. In the distance the lower part of Chantry estate can be seen behind Gypswick park. The wide road leading towards the town from the Chantry estate was originally designed to become dual carriageway leading from the A12 right into the Greyfriars roundabout. This was never built, probably due to the cost of constructing a elevated section of road over the railway and river.
