This is the southern end of Aldeburgh. The shingle beach is the start of the Orford Ness spit behind which are Aldeburgh marshes. At this point the coast is protected from erosion by the sea by groynes and a sea wall. Several million pounds has recently been spent by the N.R.A. to improve these defences which had fallen into disrepair. Even with these improvements the marshland and built up area are at risk from flooding as they are only just above sea level.
Aldeburgh is a tourist centre and we can see a large car park, a hotel, holiday homes and a boat repair yard. The town centre and famous Moot Hall lies to the north (right) of this image and is the main centre of tourist interest. |
