This is the village of Clare which is at the junction of the A1092 and B1063 between Sudbury and Haverhill. This is an example of a linear settlement as the buildings have been placed along the edge of these routeways. In the centre of the village can be seen the large church which is surrounded by roads on all sides. The River Stour flows eastwards through the wooded area at the bottom of the image on its way to Cavendish and Sudbury.
Originally a farming community, Clare developed into a centre for cloth making in the Middle Ages along with the other weaving villages of Lavenham, Long Melford and Kersey. Clare is now an important tourist attraction because of its old buildings. The wooded area to the bottom right is the site of Clare Castle. |
