Fornham - Sewage Works (1 / 14):

Fornham - Sewage Works

This is a large sewage treatment works near to the village of Fornham All Saints. Sewage from the surrounding residential area is pumped to the works by underground pipeline for treatment. There are various stages to this. Preliminary treatment consists of screening off the solid material and allowing the grit and sand washed in from roads to settle out. Primary treatment then allows the fine particles to settle out as sludge. This is then removed. The remaining liquid is sprayed over the round biological filtration beds where bacteria feed on the organic material. The liquid is again filtered before being returned to the river.

Notice how the works has been screened with trees to hide it from view and to make it in keeping with the rest of the landscape. This is particularly important as there is a development of expensive houses right next to the site.
