This is Valley Farm two kilometres to the east of Hadleigh. The area has heavy boulder clay type soils and is used extensively for arable crops such as wheat, barley and oil seed rape. A government subsidy is given to all of these crops.
Harvesting has taken place in some of the fields though some are still uncut. Notice the large fields and relatively straight field boundaries to aid mechanisation. This field layout has changed over the last few decades as smaller fields have been joined together. The 1980's saw the destruction of 10,000 km of Britains hedgerows - more than any other decade.
The farm also keeps chickens, the large barn for which can be clearly seen in the background. |
