Hadleigh - Wolves Wood:

Hadleigh - Wolves Wood

This is part of Wolves Wood to the east of Hadleigh. This 92 acres of deciduous woodland is a remnant of the ancient forest that once covered the whole of East Anglia unlike the large areas of coniferous plantation in the Brecklands. The forest is owned by the R.S.P.B. and is being managed as a bird reserve. The A1071 Sudbury to Ipswich road can be seen in the background.

The woodland probably survived the Anglo-Saxon clearances because of the areas wetness due to the heavy boulder clay soils. The area on the left has been coppiced. The underwood of Hazel and Hornbeam are rotationally cut while some of the larger trees have been left to become mature. There are mainly Oak, Ash and Birch trees though the wetter parts have Aspen and Sallow.

The woodland supports a wide variety of birds, plants and insects and is now officially designated a S.S.S.I. There are 300 plant species including Archangle and Herb Paris, a number of Roe and Muntjac deer and Nightingales, Blackcap, Whitethroat, Warblers, Woodpeckers and Spotted Flycatchers.
