Bramford - Gravel Works (4 / 29):

Bramford - Gravel Works

This gravel pit is situated at Bramford and is in the flood-plain of the River Gipping from which the gravel is being extracted. The gravel has been deposited by the river since glacial times and is being dug out by a form of open cast mining.

Notice the heaps of gravel awaiting sorting and the pits that have naturally filled up with water as the water table is so close to the surface. This form of extraction is controversial as it is often located in environmentally sensitive river valleys. However, the landscape can be restored, though it is often left as open water and used for water sports.
