This is looking towards Kings Forest which is to the north west of Bury St Edmunds. This plantation of trees was planted by the Forestry Commission after the World War 1 and are part of the much larger Brecklands forest. The land is flat but the soils are poor and sandy and are not really suitable for agriculture. Much of this area was heathland until the forest was planted.
There are only a few varieties of trees planted all of which are fast growing conifers such as Spruce. For economic reasons the trees are planted in uniform rows which aids the use of machinery. However, many people would prefer to see a wider variety of trees grown including more deciduous trees such as at Wolves Wood, which support a far wider range of wildlife than coniferous trees. |
