Layham - Aylet Gravel Pit:

Layham - Aylet Gravel Pit

This is a gravel pit similar to many found in valley floors in Suffolk such as at Bramford and Lackford. Gravel is being stored and graded in large heaps. To the right you can see disused gravel pits. In the background are the present day workings and one pit has filled with water.

Although this is well hidden from the surrounding area it has been suggested that the disused pits could be filled with domestic refuse, eventually being recovered with soil and returned to productive farmland. Local villagers are worried about this because of heavy traffic, the smell, and the possible leakage of leachate into the water table. Other gravel pits have been used for recreation or as a nature reserve as at West Stow.
