This is a view of the village of Orford and the quayside on the western bank of the River Ore. A close up view of the quayside shows yacht repair facilities and car parking. The village developed alongside the Norman castle which was located here on the slightly higher land on the edge of the marshes. Most of the land in the foreground is on just above sea level and is protected from flooding by embankments. In the bottom right the marshes have been drained and reclaimed as arable farmland. However, in the top left Chantry marshes are still being used to graze animals.
Boats can be seen moored on the River Ore which is flowing southwards towards it's mouth at Shingle Street. The Kings marshes on the left are part of Orford Ness spit which is now owned by the National Trust. |
