Aldeburgh - Town Centre (7 / 6):

Aldeburgh - Town Centre

Aldeburgh lies at the northern most end of Orford Ness. The central part of the town and the Moot Hall (centre) is seen. This used to be well inland but, like Dunwich, the town has been eroded away by the sea.

An important traditional industry is fishing and the boats can be clearly seen hauled up onto the beach. The fish is either sold locally or to tourists who visit the town in large numbers. Like many of our seaside towns car parking is a major problem as the roads were not designed for such a purpose.

The town is built just above high water level. If the sea level continues to rise in the future because of global warming, the town may have problems with flooding. The photograph was taken at low tide as a line of sand is exposed at this time below the main beach made of pebbles. To the south of the town the marshes are protected by sea defences.
