This is the northern part of Hamilton Road, a busy shopping street with a large range of shops in it due to the holiday trade. Victorian and Edwardian houses have been converted to make shops and new buildings can be seen in filling some of the gaps. Victorian terraced houses and inter war detached houses can also be seen. The more modern industrial units are situated backing on to the old railway station which has been converted into Great Eastern Square shopping precinct.
Felixstowe is a relatively new town and was built as a sea side resort and spa town from 1870 onwards. The oldest buildings are found next to the old cliff edge.
This road joined the best part of the beach with safe access down the cliffs at Bent Hill to the railway station. The railway station was built big even for those days anticipating an expansion of the town but this did not come for nearly 100 years by which time roads were much more important.
Today Felixstowe is more important for the docks that are found to the south of the town. |
