Felixstowe - Hamilton Road South (6 / 19):

Felixstowe - Hamilton Road South

The picture shows a uniform development of inter-war housing to the north west of Hamilton road which has developed into the major shopping street. It cuts across the bottom of the picture diagonally from left to right. The large building at the triangular junction between Crescent Road and Hamilton road is the cinema.

Felixstowe is a relatively new town having being built since the late Victorian times as a sea side resort from 1870 onwards. The first developments were along the cliff top and further down the coast on the shingle spit of the Landguard common. Gradually the town grew during this century and the houses and shops filled in the land between the cliff top, to the right of this picture, and the station to the left. The port development on the Orwell estuary has now taken over as being the most important part of the local economy.
