Felixstowe - Town Centre Bypass (17 / F33):

Felixstowe - Town Centre Bypass

Modern Felixstowe has almost all been built over the last 100 years. The phases of its development can be seen in this picture.

First, the oldest buildings which are military and pre-date the domestic buildings by nearly a century. These are the Napoleonic Martello Towers. Q fort can be seen here half way up the cliff which stands back from the present sea edge. This is one of five such towers built between the Orwell and Deben estuaries.

Second, the earliest Victorian holiday homes - large red bricked detached houses built on the cliff top seen central behind the fort.

Third, the Edwardian boarding houses in a "grid iron" street plan to the bottom left behind the beach along the flat shingle spit at the base of the cliff.

Forth, the local authority housing seen top left, and lastly the modern infill housing and leisure facilities along the beach and on the cliff top. The port of Felixstowe is found to the south of this area while the town centre is off to the right of the image.
