The Asda superstore on the north western outskirts of Ipswich is clearly seen behind which is a container park and a number of small industrial units. Container transport of goods also requires good roads with quick and easy access to Ports, markets and raw materials. Junction sites like this one are good places for new industry to locate.
Increase in car ownership has brought congestion to the centre of many towns and cities in this countries where traditionally shopping centres have been situated to get access to the most number of people passing by. With the coming of car ownership for all, the number of people using shopping centres in the centre of town has decreased. Business people have been quick to spot this change and have built new out of town shopping centres. Like this store they are built at major junctions of important trunk routes and town ring roads at the edge of towns where very large numbers of people have easy access by car and where land is cheap.
In this picture, this store is at the junction of the A14 main road to Bury St Edmunds and Norwich. This store is out of view from the A14 and is therefore, not quite so popular. For this reason it sells clothes as well as household goods and food under the one roof. There is also a filling station on site selling discount petrol. |
