Lowestoft - Harbour Entrance (10 / E19):

Lowestoft - Harbour Entrance

This is the entrance to the port of Lowestoft to the east of the town centre. The outer and inner harbour can be seen along with the narrow entrance protected from the North Sea by the harbour wall and breakwater.

Look for the channel that links to Lake Lothing and Oulton Broad. This is crossed by a lifting bridge that links the two halves of the town. The sandy beach that can be seen on the left, next to the marina, is part of the Esplanade, a feature of the tourist area.

Notice the industrial area in the foreground that is related to the North Sea gas industry. Only a few decades ago Lowestoft was noted for it's fishing. Now there are few, if any, fishing boats in the harbour which would have been full of boats from the herring fleet. This shows how quickly industries can change in an area.
