This is part of a general panoramic view of the town of Beccles. The market square and church of St Michael are clearly seen with the tightly packed urban environment typical of this town. Much of medieval Beccles, like Southwold, was destroyed by fire between 1580 and 1680, but there are some fine Georgian houses in the town centre.
To the top left can be seen the river Waveney which forms the county boundary with Norfolk. This used to be an inland port but is now an important centre for the Broads cabin cruiser industry. An area of industry can be seen to the left of east of the town centre and the railway line to Lowestoft is just seen in the top right. |
