This picture shows the Mildenhall Upper School close to the town centre. It was purpose built and is very well equipped. It also acts as a centre for adult learning and has other community buildings on site.
Large neighbourhood comprehensive schools have been built since 1966 to replace the earlier system of Grammar, Technical and modern secondary schools started by the 1944 Education Act.
Unlike the earlier schools these schools are co-educational and cater for all abilities and interests in one school. Because of this, these schools are larger than the schools that preceded them. In many case only one school was needed where before there might have been several. Many older buildings were adapted and extended while other completely new schools were built. Compare the site layout with other schools such as at Westley and Hadleigh. |
