The photograph shows early Victorian terraced town houses for the well to do, close to the town centre. The exercise paddocks and gallops of the Severals can be just seen in the top right hand corner. Note the lack of street parking and the back to back alley ways. There were similar developments of houses in both Ipswich and Lowestoft at this time
Newmarket has been the centre of the horse racing industry for nearly 200 years. The grasslands that developed on the chalk rock underling this part of the county are ideal for Arab race horse hoofs and legs which are delicate and easily damaged.
The town has grown to accommodate the expanding race industry over the years supporting a wide range of goods an services specially suited to horses and everything to do with them, from stable and riding equipment to specialised jewellery, paintings and sculpture of winning horses their riders and owners. |
