Southwold - Town Centre

This is a close up view of the Suffolk seaside town of Southwold the market place of which is found to the south of this picture. This developed as a fishing settlement but grew rapidly as a result of the easy access when the railway came to the town. The seafront, in the bottom right, has many large Victorian houses that have been converted into hotels and guest houses.

The town is famous for the Adnams brewery which is seen on the left hand side. With a staff of 140, the brewery is by far the most important local employer and still delivers beer to the surrounding area by horse drawn dray. The Sole Bay Brewery has been run by the Adnams family for over a century. The company is also an importer of fine wines particularly from Spain.

The church and lighthouse are clearly visible but it is interesting that the lighthouse is well inland.

Though older buildings can be seen there are very few built before 1659, as the whole town was destroyed by fire at this time.
