The southern part of the coastal town of Southwold is viewed from over the North Sea. In the foreground you can see the sand and shingle beach with groynes evenly spaced to trap beach material being moved by longshore drift. In 1996, Southwold was the only place on the Suffolk Coast to be given the European Blue Flag Beach award for its high standard of beach and water quality. The town is set on a ridge of slightly higher land which gives rise to gentle cliffs behind the beach. To the left of the town are marshes which lead to the river Blyth harbour and Walberswick.
The layout of the town centre can clearly be seen along with particular features such as the lighthouse, church and Adnams brewery for which the town is famous. |
