There are a variety of land uses on this bank of the River Deben east of the town centre. In the top left there is part of the marina along with the Tide Mill and its millpond. This operated by the water being stored in the pond at high water and flowing back to the river through the mill when the water level in the river falls. This return flow turns the mill wheels.
In the centre boats are repaired and constructed while small leisure craft are being stored on the land. Other boats are moored in the river. The quayside at the bottom of the picture has a theatre and railway station.
The River Deben is subject to flooding and in the 1990's extensive protection of the riverbank was completed. This can be seen in the centre right as embankments. The river enters the sea at Felixstowe Ferry. |
