An excellent History/Geography/Environment Project

As you will know, 2005 sees the 200 th anniversary of the Battle of Trafalgar and the death of Nelson (October 21st).
There were 27 British battleships at Trafalgar.
The Woodland Trust is creating Trafalgar Woods. There will be 27 of these: each one named after a battleship present at Trafalgar. The flagship wood will be Victory Wood near Chatham (where HMS Victory was built) and the Suffolk wood will be Prince Wood in Holbrook.
During the coming weeks The Woodland Trust will send you teaching materials that will help your pupils recognise the importance of wood in the building of these ships and the need for reafforestation in this country. It will be possible for schools to visit woods and for each pupil to plant a tree (Tree For All) as well as learning about habitats and conservation.

Well done Colneis Junior Felixstowe: Geography and Art !

150 schools entered the project; the National Art Gallery has selected work from eight schools, including from Colneis Junior - the work they selected came from Yvonne Woods' class. They chose the work because there was evidence in their sketch books that the children had been down to the beach and had spent time interviewing local people to find out why they came to Felixstowe, where from, long how etc. There was also evidence from their topic work on Felixstowe that they had been looking at the similarities and differences at the seaside past and present. They are taking the pictures of the sunset/brown sketches of the beach huts, one of which they will be enlarging to life size and the four figures drawn and collaged by the children of people at the beach in Victorian times. They will then stand the figures in front of the enlarged beach hut. The work will be displayed in the Education centre from the end of April to end July 2005.

Tsunami disaster December 2004

The shocking disaster in Asia has touched all our lives. The importance of explaining and exploring the many issues raised by the tsunami and its aftermath (especially with children and young people) cannot be underestimated.  Oxfam GB has education material that they hope will help.

Do visit: http://www.oxfam.org.uk/coolplanet/teachers/latest.htm

The Cool Planet website contains education resources to support teachers who wish to work on the issue in their schools.

Yours sincerely

A Theatre Group to Support Geography

It is unusual to find a theatre group to support geography but the Freshwater Theatre Company is prepared to do just that!
They offer an interactive session “Rivers and Water” for Key Stage 2. The children will create their own water cycle, take an imaginative journey down a river and play the Rivers of the World Game. Role play and improvisation will inspire the children to investigate the uses of water and the importance of clean water at the exciting “Question of Water” debate: They will make a presentation to the KS1/2 Geography Conference on 11 October 2004.

Cost: £95.00

Would anyone be interested in advising a group of people in the educational potential/teaching suggestions for this Project?

The ICE Project will collect and collate the testimonies of Ipswich residents who were born in the Caribbean and have moved to the local area. There are clear links with History at all key stages and also with the theme of migration in Geography.

Pleas contact Paul Blackman on 01473 418026.
